"Furniture design tells stories". The communication campaign of the 2020 Salão Design Award, the Brazilian furniture design award, has been launched. The 23rd edition of the competition uses advertising pieces that honor furniture design made in Brazil through stories of designers and their creations. Names like Zanine Caldas, Sergio Rodrigues and Paulo Mendes da Rocha will have their pieces illustrating the campaign, alongside winners of the award in previous years.

Sponsored by Berneck and Interprint do Brasil, the registrations for the 2020 Salão Design Award will be open from June 4 to September 5 for Brazilian and foreign professionals and students. The director of the Salão Design Award, Eduardo Nuncio, explains that the advertising slogan of this competition offers two possible interpretations: the creative issue for developing the piece and the relationship of the people with these creations, both the designers or the users. "Furniture encompasses creative, historical and affective issues. These are the stories we want to tell," says Nuncio.

Throughout the registration period, until the judging and announcement of the award winners, the Salão Design Award will tell the story of emblematic pieces that represent the Brazilian design, either through posters or on the Salão Design blog. The first of these iconic pieces is the Paulistano chair, designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha. The chair was commissioned in 1957 for the new headquarters of the Clube Atlético Paulistano. The original design of the Paulistano chair consists of a continuous flexible spring steel bar and very light Tucum mesh – the most modern metalwork process in Brazil at the time associated with the sagacious intelligence of the original Native American. Later, as it was no longer possible to order mesh from the native Brazilians, the chairs were coated with several other fabrics.

The Salão Design Award, organized since 1988 by the Furniture Industry Association of Bento Gonçalves (Sindmóveis), was established in the largest furniture manufacturing center in the country to meet the demands for innovation of the furniture industry at that time. In its 30 years of existence, almost 15,000 projects were entered. The award ceremony and the show of the winner products will be held at Movelsul Brasil, in March 2020, in Bento Gonçalves (RS). After that, the winners will also take part in an exhibition at the High Design Home & Office Expo in 2020.

Important changes in the regulations have taken place in the Salão Design Award this year, including modifications to the categories. In addition, only furniture projects will be accepted. Download the regulations at www.salaodesign.com.br.
